JONESBOROUGH — Fast start, steady finish.

That was the recipe for success for Church Hill’s Lucas Armstrong, who shot a 4-under-par 68 on Saturday to take the lead after the opening round of the first Food City Tri-Cities Amateur at The Ridges Golf & Country Club.

Armstrong, a member of the Walters State Community College golf team, made four birdies over a five-hole stretch on the front nine to make the turn at 32. He had two birdies and two bogeys on the back side to close with a two-shot lead over Johnson City’s Bryan Sangid. Sangid sat along in second after a 2-under 70.

Joe Meade was third at 72 and Tri-Cities Amateur Tour points leader Carlson Cox fourth at 73.
