Dobyns-Bennett overwhelms Central in sweep

KINGSPORT — Sullivan Central coach Tracy Graybeal was pleased with the way her volleyball team played on Thursday night.

But the defending Class AAA state champions made sure the scoreboard in the Buck Van Huss Dome didn’t reflect that improvement.

Dobyns-Bennett swept past the Lady Cougars 25-16, 25-13, 25-18 on Thursday in an early Big 8 Conference clash thanks in part to a towering front line.

The first and third sets were back-and-forth affairs for most of the way, but Meredith Hardy came up with key plays in each game to put the Lady Cougars away.

Hardy finished with 15 kills and five blocks on the night.

“Anybody in the gym knows she needs to get the ball,” D-B coach Kathi Shaffer said. “It’s like LeBron or Kobe — when she gets the ball, we do well.”
