There will be a 1-mile fun run at 11:30 a.m., followed by a 5-mile trail race at noon. The entry fee is $25 for the 5-miler and $20 for the 1-mile run.
While the fun run and trail race events are being held, there will be activities for youngsters. Proceeds from the event will go to the Memorial Scholarship Fund set up in coach Coughenour’s name.
Main sponsors for the races are Eastman Credit Union and Fleet Feet sports with additional sponsorship from Earth Fare of Johnson City, Rasnick Family Chiropractic and ETSU-Quillen College of Medicine 2012.
Former D-B standout Elli Bonnett is spearheading the Run for TC along with Jennifer Britton, Ben Rasnick and the Coughenour family.
“I looked around and wondered what we could do for the Memorial Scholarship Fund,’’ said Bonnett, who was the TSSAA Class AAA state runner-up in cross country in 1994 and the 800-meter state track champion in ’95.
“My first thought was to try and get people who had run for coach Coughenour to come back here and participate in a race. It seemed like it would be fun for everyone.’’
Bonnett and her crew have commitments from runners in Atlanta, Chattanooga, California, Connecticut, Boston and Charleston, S.C.
“We’re using Facebook to get the word out right now,’’ Bonnett said. “We also want everyone in the community to come to Bays Mountain and support the event; it’s open to all runners.’’
Bonnett, now a medical student at East Tennessee State, has fond memories of coach Coughenour.
“Running for him was one of the most favorite times in my life,’’ said Bonnett. “He believed in us so much it made it easier to do what he asked of us. He gave us all so much confidence.’’
