CHURCH HILL — Under the bright afternoon sun, a great tragedy gave way to a small triumph for Sullivan South’s girls golf team at Silver Lake Golf Course.

Three days after Jake Logue, a senior lineman on South’s football team, collapsed during a game in Knoxville and passed away, the Lady Rebels composed themselves and won the Big 8 Conference girls golf tournament by 15 strokes over Science Hill on Monday.

South’s Brianna White fired a 77 to capture medalist honors while Lacey York came home with a 79, giving the Lady Rebels a team total of 156.

“We went to school this morning and kids seem to be holding up OK under the circumstances,” South coach Anthony Richardson said. “It was good to come out here. I was glad to get to come out here myself to get away from it.”

White, a sophomore, started strong on the front nine, firing a 37 despite some putting issues that didn’t improve much as her round progressed. She held on to card her 77, however, leaving her two shots clear of York.

“I was hitting the ball really far, but my birdie putts just weren’t dropping,” White said. “I was giving them good runs, so I had good par looks.”

White said she has a surgery scheduled for Friday, so this will probably be her last week of competition this season. If that’s the case, she certainly went out on a high note.

York, a freshman, will look to continue her strong play in next week’s district tournament. Using Monday’s effort as a barometer, Richardson said the hard work put in by his golfers is finally paying dividends.

“These two have worked hard all summer,” he said. “They do a great job. Brianna’s just a sophomore and Lacey is a freshman so the future looks pretty good for our girls program.”

Science Hill’s Madison Alexander managed an 83 for a third-place finish despite tweaking her back on the driving range prior to the round.

Dobyns-Bennett finished fourth with a 204 total, which came on the strength of Aubrey Baker’s 84.
