HARROGATE — Lincoln Memorial University golf coach Travis Muncy, who also serves as the director of golf at Woodlake Golf Course in Tazewell, Tenn., has been named the 2008 Tri-Cities Chapter PGA Merchandiser of the Year and was recently awarded the Horton Smith Award.
The Horton Smith Award is given for outstanding service in the areas of education and building the PGA professional’s image. All chapter awards are voted on by its members.
Muncy is an active member of the Tennessee Section PGA and has served in leadership positions of the Knoxville chapter in the past. Woodlake moved to the Tri-Cities chapter a year ago, and Muncy will serve as vice president of the chapter beginning next month.
He has been a part of the PGA for 15 years and has served on the chapter board of directors for seven years. This is the third time he has been honored with a chapter’s annual award. Other awards handed out on the chapter level include Professional of the Year, Chapter Teacher of the Year, Assistant Golf Professional of the Year, the Junior Golf Leader Award, Richard Eller Growth of the Game Award, and Chapter Player of the Year.
In addition to his duties on the course as a professional and coach, Muncy has been tapped by LMU to develop a professional golf management (PGM) major in business. The program is the first of its kind in Tennessee.
The major leads to the bachelor of business administration degree and requires the completion of the business administration core as well as the PGM requirements. Students learn basic management practices alongside golf-specific courses. This includes everything from finance, marketing and management to golf instruction, retail management and turfgrass management.
Classes began in the fall, and Muncy is exploring PGA accreditation for the program.
Muncy took the helm of the Railsplitter golf program in 2003 and the Lady Railsplitter program in 2005. He has led the Railsplitters to four invitational titles, and three of his players have won medalist honors during his tenure. His Lady Railsplitters have tallied two titles of their own, with one player bringing home medalist honors.
Muncy also teaches golf for the university’s physical education department.
