Hokie women advance

BLACKSBURG - With strong defensive play in the second half, Virginia Tech beat Western Carolina 74-64 Saturday night to advance to the third round of the women's NIT.

Brittany Cook scored 20 points to pace the Hokies (19-14), who will face the winner of today's game between Auburn and UAB.

Nare Diawara added a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds, while Laura Haskins scored a career-high 12 points.

Western Carolina finishes 24-10.

STARKVILLE, Miss. - Jamont Gordon had 20 points and 10 assists to lead the Bulldogs through the second round.

Mississippi State (20-13) scored 50 points in the paint while outrebounding Bradley (22-13) 51-32.

The victory sets up a quarterfinal matchup with Florida State on Tuesday in Starkville.
