Prep roundup: U-High ends Clinch's run in regionals

JOHNSON CITY - Clinch made its first-ever appearance in regional basketball play Saturday, but it didn't go as well as the Wildcats would've liked.

Clinch fell in the Region 1-AA quarterfinals, dropping a 100-50 decision to University High.

The Junior Bucs (24-7) sprinted out of the gate and led 58-26 at halftime. Aaron Woodacre paced four U-High players in double figures with 19 points.

Dustin Murrell continued his stellar play this season for Clinch (17-14), registering a game-high 22. In the process, Murrell became the school's all-time leading scorer with 1,811 career points.

Science Hill 55, Cherokee 46

ROGERSVILLE - The Hilltoppers found themselves in a dogfight with the Chiefs before finally pulling away in the Region 1-AAA quarterfinals.

Chris Smith, Diante Grey and Ashlan Adams each scored 11 points for Science Hill (30-7).

Brian Milan led Cherokee (16-14) with 13 points. B.D. Snow and Josh Williams added 10 apiece.

State Swimming

NASHVILLE - Science Hill sophomore Kyle Owens won his second gold medal of the Tennessee state swimming and diving championships at the Centennial Sportsplex. Owens, who won the 200-yard freestyle Friday, added a victory in the 100 backstroke. His time of 50.24 earned him All-America honors.

Sullivan South's Kristiana Feeser finished eighth in the 100 backstroke with a time of 59.40.

Dobyns-Bennett's Britt Brewster was ninth overall in the 1-meter dive competition, compiling 314.45 points.
