Prep roundup: Free throws secure No. 3 spot for Clinch

HARROGATE - Clinch turned a close game into a runaway thanks to some impressive shooting from the free throw line.

The Wildcats went 17-for-22 from the charity stripe in the fourth quarter to secure a 66-49 victory over Jellico on Monday, earning the No. 3 spot in the District 2-A boys basketball tournament at Lincoln Memorial University.

Dustin Murrell once again came up big for Clinch (17-13), pouring in 31 points. Tobey Norris added 24.

The Wildcats will travel to the loser of the District 1-A championship game between University High and Cloudland - which will be played tonight - when the region tournament gets under way Saturday.

Ben Mitchell's 15 points were tops for the Blue Devils.

District 1-AA Girls

JONESBOROUGH - Alisha Mainer and Alicia Engle combined for 38 points as Unicoi County beat South Greene 53-47 to win the District 1-AA tournament title.

Unicoi (20-10) will host Rutledge in the first round of the Region 1-AA tourney. South Greene will host Pigeon Forge, the third-place team from District 2.

Elizabethton defeated Happy Valley 48-41 in the third-place game.
