Lady Indians roll past Crockett 9-0

KINGSPORT — The season started off with a bang on Tuesday afternoon for the Dobyns-Bennett girls soccer team.

Taking on David Crockett, the Lady Indians breezed to a 9-0 victory at Indian Highland Park.

Senior McKenzie Guest scored a hat trick to lead D-B. She also had an assist on the first goal.

“The team came out and did a great job,” Guest said. “We lost some great players from last year, and the younger players stepped up.

“Last year we had a good team, and we made it further in the postseason than I ever had before. I was a little bit worried coming out, but the younger players showed us what they can do, and I hope we can make it further this year.”

The Lady Indians controlled most of the game, allowing the Lady Pioneers to cross the centerline less than a handful of times and only once in the first half.

Jessica Winkler opened the scoring in the eighth minute and Kinzee Mounger followed five minutes later with another goal. Claire Chapman, Tayla Holt, Callie Stidham and Annabeth Parker added the other goals for the Tribe.

The Lady Indians took 23 total shots with 15 of them on goal.

Crockett’s Alyssa Suits made 13 saves in goal.

The sheet was almost clean for the defense of D-B, but Crockett got one look at the goal late in the first half. It was stopped by goalkeeper Cydney Kinkead on a diving attempt.

“The offense was really clicking today,” Dobyns-Bennett head coach Blake Rutherford said. “We made some really good runs from the midfield forward. We still have to do a better job of finishing. But it’s a good starting point for the season.

“This team has developed in the past year, but there is still room for improvement. Especially with the tactical shift, we’re playing some different roles with different players. It’s not easy to throw out one playbook and install a whole new one, but they’ve picked it up and we still have to keep working.”

The Lady Indians will host Knox West on Thursday at Indian Highland Park. Start time is set for 6 p.m.
