That was all the Warriors needed to win the Mountain 7 District boys soccer tournament championship.
A goal from Adrian Wheatley on an assist from Joey Collins with 5:44 left to play in the first half gave Central a 1-0 win over John Battle in the championship game at Central’s Tommy McAmis Field.
The win secured Central’s first boys soccer district championship as well as its first trip to the Region 2D tournament.
Central will host a Region 2D quarterfinal game on Monday against the fourth seed from the Southwest District.
“It’s pretty exciting. They’ve worked really hard,” said Central coach Meagan Morgan. “This is my fourth year coaching them and it’s been a long time coming. They’ve developed in their skill, they’ve developed in the game, and I think all of that has factored in over the last four years.”
Thursday’s win was a tough one for the Warriors. Morgan said the team showed maturity by sticking with the game plan.
“It wasn’t pretty. It wasn’t pretty, but they got it done,” she said. “I think that’s what matters. They’ve learned how to dig in and get it done. That’s the main difference this season.”
In the consolation match, Tayen Roark scored two goals, including one in the first overtime period, to lift Union over Gate City, 2-1. Bears goalkeeper Justin Falin had 12 saves.
