Sullivan County commissioners will have to “start juggling things around” to balance a 2018-2019 budget without property tax increase. Each penny of the property tax rate is projected to generate $372,439 for the current budget cycle. That equals about $239,000 in new money for the county’s general fund under the current tax rate.

The two big names that were ousted in Thursday's county general election were Budget Committee chairman Stacy Vaughan in District 3; and Budget Committee member Bob Palmer in District 7.

At one time Bailey and Hicks sat beside each other on the Hawkins County Commission — Bailey as mayor and Hicks and Budget Committee chairman. Bailey's chances probably weren't helped by the fact that the highly unpopular 2017 $40 wheel tax came on his watch.

Roe, who is seeking a sixth term in office, defeated Todd McKinley and Mickie Lou Banyas in Northeast Tennessee’s First District Congressional GOP Primary. The Associated Press declared Roe the victor less than an hour after the polls closed. Roe took 72 percent of the early/absentee voting in Sullivan County.

Final elections results have now been posted. Winners include Richard Venable in the county mayor’s race and Jeff Cassidy in the sheriff’s contest.

Polls will be open today in Sullivan County from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. for the county general election and party primaries for state and federal offices. Nearly 12,000 Sullivan County voters cast ballots during early voting, which ended Saturday. That’s down from turnout during the last comparable election.

Multiple times in past elections we have seen local races decided by less than a dozen votes. So if even half of those who believe their vote doesn’t matter actually went to the polls, what do you reckon would happen? We either get decisive victories, or we get different outcomes.
Todd McKinley is one of four candidates in the Republican primary for United States House of Representatives, 1st Congressional District. The Republican primary is Thursday, Aug. 2.
Roe is running for a sixth term. He is opposed by Republican Todd McKinley in this Thursday’s GOP primary and by Democrat Martin Olsen in the November General Election if he wins the primary race.
