Update: 1:42 p.m. The Sullivan County Sheriff's Office has identified the deceased inmate as Joey Edward Cunningham, 41.
He had been booked into the jail in Blountville on charges of initiation of a process intended to manufacture methamphetamine within 1,000 feet of a school and possession of drug paraphernalia.
A man who had been held on drug charges at the Sullivan County jail was found dead in his cell Monday night.
According to a press release from the Sullivan County Sheriff's Office, corrections officers found the man at approximately 8:50 p.m. He was reportedly hanging from a sheet that had been tied to an air vent.The section of the jail where he was located has a common dayroom and individual, one-person cells.The inmate was given CPR until EMS arrived and transported him to Bristol Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. As of early Tuesday afternoon his next-of-kin had yet to be reached and notified, thus the SCSO declined to identify him. Police say he had been held in the Blountville facility since June 11.As is protocol for inmate deaths, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has been requested to probe the incident. No additional information was immediately available.
