Deceased man found in creek near Greeneville Commons

Greeneville police are asking the public for help after locating a deceased man in a creek, according to a press release.

Emergency personnel located the body of Robert Luther Young, 33, lying face down in a creek between the Greeneville Commons and Justice Drive. Young was listed as homeless and relatives out of state have been notified. Detectives believed he came from Indiana.

He had been dead for an undetermined amount of time, but estimates say he had been dead for at least a couple of days. The reason it took a while to find him is because the creek is not in a heavy traffic area and has a lot of weeds around it, according to GPD Detective David Crum.

The release stated there was no evidence at the scene to classify the death as a homicide, but detectives are still looking into the death.

"We like to go ahead and continue the death investigation," Crum said. "There was nothing obvious as far as trauma. We're just doing our due diligence."

An autopsy has been ordered for Young. Crum said the pathologist would determine the cause of death.

Crum said the GPD is trying to go ahead and collect any video that may exist from around the creek. A receipt was found at the scene which indicated Young visited Kmart on June 5 around 8:30 p.m.

Anyone who may have had contact with Young after June 5 is asked to contact GPD Detective Lieutenant Bob Vereecke at 787-6194.
