New details released in vehicle crash that killed 7-year-old

A truck rolled backward out of a parking lot and eventually struck a guardrail, killing a 7-year-old girl over the weekend.

New details were released this morning regarding the crash that killed Ava Marie Wagers, Barnett Drive, Kingsport. Officers with the Sullivan County Sheriff's Office first received a call about the crash around 1 p.m. Saturday afternoon. The SCSO Fatal Incident Reconstruction and Support Team (FIRST) responded to the scene to investigate the crash.

According to a press release, Wagers' father parked his Chevy S10 truck in front of Dollar General Store on New Beason Well Road, leaving his daughter in the truck. While he was inside, the vehicle began to roll backward.

The truck rolled down the parking lot and continued to roll south on New Beason Well Road. It eventually ran off the roadway and struck a guardrail and road sign. Wagers was attempting to get out of the truck when it struck the guardrail.

Wagers, was transported to the Holston Valley Medical Center where she later died as a result of her injuries.

According to SCSO public information officer Leslie Earhart, charges are pending in the case based on the outcome of the investigation.
