TICKLED PINK for survivors

Leigh Ann Laube • Jun 6, 2014 at 2:23 PM

The upcoming Tickled Pink Survivor Celebration will celebrate survivors of breast cancer and will feature professional Nashville magician Dr. Gary Flegal, who's also an expert in stress management.

Hosted by the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Tri-Cities Affiliate and sponsored by Kingsport Surgical Associates and Fatz Caf, the Survivor Celebration will be held at 5 p.m., June 14, at the Kingsport Farmers Market in downtown Kingsport.

In addition to the headlining entertainment, the event will include door prizes, a photo booth, and a special gift for all survivors. Kylie McGivern, news anchor for WJHL News Channel 11, will host the event, and musical entertainment will be provided by gospel singer T.R. Dunn.

"We're doing this for all of our survivors. We love to give them recognition and show support to them," said Caty Rose, interim executive director of the Tri-Cities Affiliate. "[Flegal] does all kinds of great shows, and I think it's going to be a great time."

Stress management is one of Flegal's passions because it allows him to help people make significant and positive life changes. His other passion is magic. Flegal has been a professional magician for more than 30 years and continues practicing his art at every opportun i t y.

Flegal's doctorate in health education and human performance from Michigan State University provided training in a wide variety of holistic and health-oriented practices, including exercise physiology, general health education and nutrition practices, men's health, and stress management. He earned further practical training in stress management while working in affiliation with the original Mind/Body Medical Institute at Harvard University.

He also possesses master level training in Reiki, a hands-on healing therapy recognized by the National Institutes of Health's National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine. Reiki is a healing practice that originated in Japan. In the United States, Reiki is part of complementary and alternative medicine. Flegal is also a certified consulting hypnotist, certified by the National Guild of Hypnotists.

Through his magic, the former teacher and health-care professional will illustrate stress management concepts in a fun and visual way.

The survivor event is open to all breast cancer survivors, their family and friends. Sharon Barger, a breast cancer survivor, will be recognized as an honorary guest. She will share her story with the audience.

"This is a great way to connect with other women that are going through or may be at the same stage," Rose said. "Maybe they can get some feedback or set up a survivor relationship and help one another get through the period after going through treatment."

Tickets are $5 each and are available by visiting www.komentricities.org or by calling 765-9313. Online tickets will be available through June 7. Tickets will also be available at the door.
