GATE CITY — A Southwest Virginia man who allegedly pulled a gun on a high school student last year in a municipal parking lot was indicted by a Scott County grand jury on felony charges.

Jimmie Lee Akers, 47, of Gate City, had indictments returned Feb. 3 on a single count each of abduction and using a firearm in the commission of a felony. Akers is scheduled to be arraigned Friday in Scott County Circuit Court.

Akers was arrested Oct. 2, 2013, by the Gate City Police Department following an incident that occurred at the Water Street municipal parking lot in downtown Gate City. According to police reports, Akers was sitting in the parking lot in an SUV when the alleged victim in the incident, a high school senior, pulled in driving a pickup truck.

Akers reportedly got into the passenger’s side of the pickup shortly after the teen entered the parking lot and attempted to keep him from exiting the vehicle by restraining him with his arm. Once the teen managed to exit the truck, Akers allegedly pulled a handgun and threatened to “drop him” if the teen did not get back in, police said.

Despite the alleged threat, the teen was reportedly able to leave the scene unharmed. Akers was taken into custody a short while later at his Gate City home.
