Hawkins County Board of Education approves sewer deadline

ROGERSVILLE — Surgoinsville has an extra 15 weeks to provide sewer service to the two local schools, but the Hawkins County Board of Education isn’t ready to sign off on the revised sewer contract just yet.

On Thursday the BOE approved a request from Surgoinsville to extend a June 14 deadline for providing sewer service to the elementary and middle schools to Oct. 1.

Board member Bob Larkins expressed concern, however, that there was no specific timeline or schedule for removal of the old wastewater treatment plant.

Surgoinsville will be removing the old plant as part of the overall project.

“When the contract is finalized, it needs to have the date of the total completion of the project, demolition and everything, rather than just leaving that open ended where they can get to it whenever they get around to it,” Larkins said.

Hawkins County Schools contributed $200,000 to the $3.5 million Surgoinsville sewer project, which will be advertised for construction bids this week.
