Kingsport’s Board of Education recently adopted that and two other new policies, and the Sullivan County BOE has adopted the same concussions policy.
Continuing the city board’s ongoing review of the KSC Policy Manual, the board voted to approve the three, all recommended by the Policy Committee and the Tennessee School Boards Association. They were approved 5-0 and are as follows:
• Policy 6.401 Student Health Services. The Policy Committee recommends adoption of the TSBA base policy, with language identifying the major objective of the student health services program is to protect and promote the health of every student.
• Policy 6.700 Student Activities. The Policy Committee recommended adoption of the TSBA base policy. Language in the policy states that no new activity, team, or organization shall be permitted unless approved by the board upon recommendation of the superintendent or designee. Also included are sections regarding hazing, fundraising, and lotteries.
• And Policy 6.413 Prevention and Treatment of Sports Related Concussions. The Policy Committee recommended adoption of the TSBA base policy, which requires school districts to adopt guidelines regarding information and education regarding head injuries, requires removal of any student athlete who appears to have suffered a concussion, and requires a student athlete to be cleared by a licensed health care professional before being allowed to return to play or practice.
