TBI corrects press release, says man shot by KPD had knife, but his "gun" was a shingle

Staff reports • Aug 31, 2013 at 3:59 PM

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation sent out a press release Friday correcting a previous release about a man shot by Kingsport Police Department officers in June.

TBI officials stated Thursday that Jeffrey Caldwell, 25, was brandishing a knife and a handgun. The correction released today said he was brandishing a knife and what appeared to be a handgun, but later turned out to be a roof shingle.

Caldwell's family members told the Times-News in June all he had was a roof shingle.
