GATE CITY — A Southwest Virginia man accused of severely abusing his live-in girlfriend's 14-month-old son had his request for bond denied during an appearance Wednesday in Scott County Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court.

Donald Wayne Snodgrass, 29, of Nickelsville is being held on two counts of aggravated malicious wounding of a child and a single count of felony abuse and neglect following his arrest earlier this month by the Scott County Sheriff's Office.

Both Snodgrass and his girlfriend, and co-defendant, Crystal Gail Smith, 22, of Nickelsville, requested mental evaluations during their court appearances.

Smith, who is also being held without bond, is charged with felony abuse and neglect after she allegedly failed to seek medical treatment for her son for several days after he was injured.

Snodgrass' next bond hearing in Scott County court is scheduled for Sept. 6. That court date follows an appeal hearing that took place earlier Thursday.

The couple were arrested by Scott County authorities on Aug. 15 after deputies allegedly found the child with two black eyes and living in deplorable conditions.

Authorities accuse Snodgrass of injuring the child when it would not stop crying. The boy was taken to the University of Tennessee Medical Center for treatment following the arrests of Smith and Snodgrass. Doctors reportedly told investigators the child had suffered a fractured skull and was experiencing bleeding on the brain.

While an update on the child's condition has not been given, Scott County authorities said he has been discharged from the hospital and has received follow-up medical treatment in the area.

Scott County Sheriff John Puckett said authorities began their investigation Aug. 13 after a person unrelated to the child requested a welfare check.

Snodgrass was previously convicted in Kingsport of three counts of child abuse stemming from injuries he inflicted on a three-year-old.
