One man is in custody and another hospitalized following an early Friday morning shooting along a Kingsport roadway.

Police are still collecting evidence and investigating the incident, with one person they interviewed saying it may center around accusations of theft.

According to a report at the Sullivan County Sheriff's Office, shortly before 2 a.m. deputies responded to 1335 Jackson Hollow Road. Two residents of the apartment complex called 911 after hearing a gunshot, followed by a man screaming for help.

At the scene police found Michael Light, 23, of apartment 2, lying outside in a pool of blood. The incident report says he had a "large wound" to his left forearm, while a trail of blood led to the roadway.

Light allegedly told police that's where he was shot by Thomas Hammonds, 59, who is the ex-husband of one of his relatives. A woman interviewed by detectives reported the altercation may have arisen over allegations of theft.

SCSO Public Information Officer Leslie Earhart says Light had arrived at Hammonds' home on Brookfield Lane earlier in the evening, asking for a ride. As they drove to Light's residence an argument occurred, according to Earhart, with Hammonds ordering him to get out. Police believe Light was shot after exiting the vehicle.

Detectives located Hammonds at his residence, 154 Brookfield Lane, lot 3, and took him into custody. He is charged with criminal attempt to commit first degree murder and aggravated assault.

Light was transported by EMS to Holston Valley Medical Center. He's reportedly in stable but serious condition after undergoing surgery.

Police are continuing to investigate the incident. Light claims Hammonds shot him with a .20-gauge shotgun, while a report on the incident says wadding from a spent shotgun shell was located in the roadway.
