“Mr. Lewis, I forgive you and hope that you will use the rest of your life being productive and live the kind of life that would make your parents proud and that pleases God,” Sgt. Lowell Russell wrote in a letter designed to offer Knox County Criminal Court Judge Steve Sword a glimpse inside his own suffering.
Russell has spent more than a year undergoing rehabilitation for the devastating injuries he suffered in a March 2012 Lewis has long admitted he caused when he fell asleep behind the wheel and smashed his rig into Russell’s cruiser as the unsuspecting trooper sat parked alongside Interstate 40/75 filling out paperwork.
Lewis not only admitted fault but worked with law enforcers and emergency workers to pull Russell from the fiery wreckage. Assistant Public Defender Bob Edwards has described finding Lewis kneeling in his jail cell soon after the crash, offering up prayers.
