KINGSPORT — Police say a 9-year-old girl drowned Sunday afternoon after apparently wandering to a fenced-in swimming pool near a Bloomingdale residence she and her father were visiting.

At about 1:30 p.m. Sunday, the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a drowning at 247 Samuel Street, which is located in the Bloomingdale section of Kingsport.

According to SCSO public information officer Leslie Earhart, when deputies arrived EMS personnel were already on the scene performing CPR on a 9-year-old girl.

The child was eventually transported to the Holston Valley Medical Center, where she later died.

“The victim was at the home on Samuel Street with her father,” Earhart stated in her report. “The two were delivering a lawnmower that the homeowner had purchased earlier in the day. According to statements taken at the scene, the victim was playing in the yard, near a fenced-in swimming pool, while the two men were looking at the lawnmower.”

Earhart added, “Witnesses state the victim’s father looked up to check on her and could not find her. She was located a short time later in the pool. The men performed CPR on the child until EMS arrived.”

The investigation is ongoing, and Earhart said no further information was available.

Earhart said the name of the victim was being withheld pending notification of the rest of her family.
