Man wanted in Kingsport arrested on separate charge in Virginia

A man wanted in Kingsport for armed robbery was arrested in Virginia after shoplifting and striking an officer, according to a police report.

Matthew Leonard, 21, 1565 Lawrence Street Apartment 2, was charged with malicious injury to a law enforcement officer, obstruction of justice, shoplifting and assault and battery on an officer.

Law enforcement officials with the Lee County Sheriff’s office were dispatched to Walmart in Jonesville, Va in response to a shoplifter.

Officers located Leonard in the electronics department and attempted to arrest him for shoplifting. Leonard struck the first officer and tried to run but was apprehended by officers in the parking lot.

After he was arrested, Leonard was also found to be wanted in Kingsport for armed robbery. He was transported to Duffield jail and is being held without bond. He will be arraigned in Lee County General District Court on Monday.

Once the charges are done in Lee County, he will be returned to Tennessee to face charges.
