CHURCH HILL — A Hawkins County man accused of pointing a shotgun at his girlfriend’s face last week reportedly told the Hawkins County Sheriff’s Office he’s been “snorting” his medication.

Steven Randall Gilbert, 38, 227 Payne Ridge Road Lot 9, Church Hill, was arraigned Monday in Hawkins County Sessions Court on charges including aggravated assault, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Shorlty before 10 p.m. Thursday, HCSO Deputy Josh Byrd responded to a domestic complaint at Gilbert’s residence.

Upon his arrival, Byrd spoke to Heather Gray, who also resides at that address. Gray stated that Gilbert, her boyfriend, had pointed a shotgun at her face.

“Mrs. Gray’s small child was standing next to officers and stated that Mr. Gilbert had indeed pointed the gun at Mrs. Gray during an argument,” Byrd said. “This incident happened while standing in the kitchen. Mrs. Gray also stated that this was not the first time this has happened.”

Byrd added, “The argument was believed to be started because of Mrs. Gray being at the neighbor’s residence during a party.”

Gray also reportedly told officers that Gilbert is a convicted felon. A search of the residence allegedly revealed him to be in possession a 16-gauge shotgun and a .22 caliber rifle, which were hidden under Gilbert’s mattress.

When deputies searched Gilbert’s pockets they allegedly found 16-gauge shotgun shells and a white medicine bottle. Inside the bottle, Byrd allegedly found a short white straw.

“Mr. Gilbert advised that he used it for ‘snorting’ his medication,” Byrd said.

As of Tuesday, Gilbert remained held in the Hawkins County Jail on $20,000 bond. A preliminary hearing date is scheduled for Aug. 26.
