KINGSPORT — Police responding to an overturned pickup truck on Wednesday afternoon had to search for the driver, who allegedly shot his way out of the cab, pitched his gun and fled into the woods.

He was located approximately a half mile away, according to an arrest report, and drunk.

The incident began at 5:40 p.m. when Sullivan County Central Dispatch was alerted to a crash at 519 Rock City Drive, Kingsport. An arrest report at the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office says that while deputies were en route dispatch was informed the driver had fired “several shots from the vehicle.”

Officers arrived to find several witnesses at the crashed 2013 Chevrolet Silverado. An incident report says the driver, later identified as Warren Moore, 21, apparently exited the roadway and entered a ditch. He’s then believed to have overcorrected and lost control, turning the pickup over and coming to rest on the driver’s side.

Police were told Moore was spotted getting out of the pickup with a gun in his hand, pitched it into some weeds and ran into a wooded area.

Deputies established a perimeter to conduct a search, locating Moore approximately a half mile from where he crashed. He allegedly confessed to drinking liquor and beer, saying he was trapped in the vehicle after it rolled onto its side.

That’s when he grabbed a pistol that was inside the pickup, according to his arrest report, and shot holes in a window to get out. Police say he also admitted to throwing down the pistol and running from the scene. His firearm was located in weeds near the crash.

Moore, of 2524 Essex Drive, Kingsport, was transported to the hospital to be checked for injuries, as well as to determine the alcohol content of his blood.

He was then booked into the Sullivan County jail in Blountville, charged with reckless endangerment, DUI, evading arrest, leaving the scene of a crash and unlawful carrying or possession of a weapon.
