KINGSPORT — A 12-year-old girl was in serious but stable condition Wednesday night after riding a bicycle into the path of an oncoming vehicle.

At approximately 8:50 p.m., the Kingsport Police Department was notified of a motor vehicle and bicycle crash on West Sullivan Street at Hammond Avenue.

Police say that Donald Robinson, 26, Dale Street, Kingsport, was driving a Chevy Malibu eastbound on West Sullivan and was approaching Hammond when the 12-year-old failed to obey a stop sign and rode into his path.

Robinson attempted to avoid the girl by braking and steering to the left, but the right front corner of the vehicle struck the bicycle.

The bike rider was transported to Holston Valley by EMS. She was not wearing a helmet. Police say if one had been used, her injuries could have been less serious.

Authorities say no charges will be placed against Robinson. The Traffic Unit is continuing to investigate the incident. The name of the juvenile will not be released.
