Wet footprints in the grass led to one Kingsport man’s arrest on theft charges.

Thomas D. Beaver, 27, no address given, was arrested on theft under $500 and two counts of retaliation for past action, which is a felony.

According to a police report, the incident started just before 9 a.m. on Thursday when someone reported a man walking along Bloomingdale Road carrying a copper pipe. The caller believed the pipe was stolen and confronted Beaver, who threatened him before dropping the pipe and walking away.

A few minutes later, two detectives in the area spotted Beaver on Bloomingdale Road. Beaver told detectives he found the metal near a trash can and had not stolen it, the police report stated.

Detectives investigated where the metal was taken from and noticed wet footprints in the grass that led to a home with a large metal garage, not far from where the suspect was found.

When detectives spoke with the property owner, he confirmed someone had stolen a metal pipe from him. Beaver was placed under arrest at that point.

After he was placed under arrest, Beaver began threatening to kill the detectives, which led to the two charges for retaliation for past action.
