ROSE HILL, Va. — A Lee County man is in police custody after he allegedly used a shotgun to kill his former stepfather Sunday morning at a Rose Hill apartment.

Richard “Fat Baby” Brooks, 45, of Rose Hill, was arrested by the Lee County Sheriff’s Office on a single count of first-degree murder for allegedly shooting Danny “Sad” Catron, 62, of Rose Hill.

Lee County authorities identified Brooks as a former stepson of Catron’s. Lee County Sheriff Gary Parsons said Catron’s past treatment of Brooks’ mother while they were married appeared to be the motive behind the shooting.

Brooks had also reportedly been drinking alcohol prior to the shooting.

According to Parsons, a deputy was sent to Catron’s residence located at 6024 Dr. Thomas Walker Road, Rose Hill around 10:20 a.m. Sunday after central dispatch received a report of a gunshot being fired at the apartment.

When the deputy arrived on the scene, he reportedly observed Catron lying in the residence as the result of an apparent gunshot wound, Parsons said.

Catron was transported by the Thomas Walker Rescue Squad to Lee Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Parsons said shortly after the shooting, Brooks went to a friend’s residence still carrying the shotgun used to murder Catron. Brooks allegedly told his friend of the shooting.

Parsons said Brooks turned himself into authorities at the scene of the shooting about an hour after it occurred. The weapon in the alleged shooting was confiscated from the friend’s residence, Parsons said.

Brooks was taken into custody on the murder charge before being transported to the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail in Duffield, where he is being held without bond.

The shooting is still under investigation, Parsons said.
