KINGSPORT -- A Sullivan County jailer who was taken into custody in Virginia early Friday for drunk driving was arrested a second time in the same day for DUI following a traffic stop that occurred on Wadlow Gap Road.

Jeffery Mathes, 51, was arrested by the Sullivan County Sheriff's Office just after 9:30 p.m. Friday evening, roughly an hour after he was released from jail in Virginia.

Mathes, a five-year employee of the Sullivan County Sheriff's Office, was charged with DUI and speeding following the second arrest.

According to SCSO spokesperson Leslie Earhart, Mathes was arrested earlier in the day Friday for DUI by the Gate City Police Department and released on bond from the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail in Duffield to a family member around 8:30 p.m.

Approximately an hour later, Earhart said an SCSO running stationary radar on Wadlow Gap Road near Bloomingdale observed a vehicle traveling south at 67 mph in a 40 mph zone.

After stopping the vehicle and making contact with the driver, the officer reportedly smelled a strong odor of alcohol. At that point, the car's driver was identified as Mathes.

Earhart said Mathes was taken into custody after failing to property perform field sobriety tests.

Mathes was taken to the Sullivan County Correctional Facility in Blountville, where he was released this morning on a $1,000 bond.
