The Mountain Press reports the team from agencies that included the University of Tennessee found items from Iron Forge, which was built in 1817 and was the original forge from which the city got its name. The team set up by the Old Mill General Store near the Little Pigeon River recently to search for remains of the furnace, hammer, water flume and water wheel.
UT team leader Elizabeth Kellar DeCorse said some artifacts were lying in plain sight, and she thinks they found the place where the furnace was located.
She says the team will use the information to map out the remains and draft a report to document the city's history.
