BULLS GAP — A pregnant Johnson City woman told police a man punched her in the head and stole her purse at a Red Box movie rental kiosk in Bulls Gap early Tuesday morning.

The incident occurred between midnight and 1 a.m. Tuesday at the Red Box kiosk in front of the Dollar General Store on Highway 11-E in Bulls Gap.

Brittany Cope, 25, of Johnson City, who is five months pregnant, told Hawkins County Sheriff’s Office Detective Chris Price she was looking at movie selections when she heard a noise, and then noticed a white male coming toward her.

She described him as about 6 feet tall, of average build and wearing a black ballcap, flannel shirt and blue jeans.

“She stated that he grabbed her purse and they began to struggle over it,” Price stated in his report. “She stated that he then punched her in the side of the head, and then in the face, causing her to fall to the ground. He then ran away with the purse, but she didn’t see where to.”

The purse and its contents were valued at about $100 and included photos of children, makeup and prenatal vitamins as well as prescriptions for Nuratin, Subtex and Klonopin, according to the sheriff’s office.

Cope stated that she thought the assailant was on foot because she didn’t see or hear a vehicle.

After the robbery Cope got back into her vehicle and went to a nearby apartment where she was staying.

Hawkins County Sheriff Ronnie Lawson said Thursday there was no suspect yet and the incident remained under investigation.

Anyone with information about this strong-arm robbery is asked to contact the HCSO at (423) 272-4848.
