GATE CITY -- A Gate City man accused of sexually assaulting a minor was indicted by a Scott County grand jury Thursday on felony charges.

William Howard Laney, 51, of Gate City, was indicted for aggravated sexual battery of a family member and object sexual penetration by force.

The object penetration charge carries a maximum sentence of life in prison, while aggravated sexual battery is punishable by up to 20 years of incarceration.

The Scott County Commonwealth's Attorney's Office declined to comment on the charges against Laney due to the nature of the case.

According to court records, the charges stem from an alleged offense against a female relative, who is also a minor, that occurred in Scott County on Aug. 28, 2012.

Records show Laney was arrested Oct. 1, 2012 following a joint-investigation by the Scott County Sheriff's Office and the Scott County Department of Social Services.

Laney has been held without bond at the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail in Duffield since his arrest last year.

An arraignment date for Laney is pending.
