Gate City mayor driving force behind community prayer meeting

GATE CITY — Praise, fellowship and worship, mixed with a helping of live music, will be the focus of a community prayer meeting being held this Saturday in Gate City.

Organized by Gate City Mayor Frances Perry, with the assistance of several area churches, the free event will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. at Gate City High School’s Legion Field.

Christian artist Michael O’Brien, the former lead singer of Newsong, will be the event’s musical entertainment.

Perry said Saturday’s event was inspired by community meetings area churches held years ago.

“I just feel like it’s a time for Christians to come together and pray and praise God and come back to Him,” Perry said. “Many years ago, ever summer, the churches in Gate City would come together to hold a joint-meeting at the football field and it was an uplifting time. Last year in the early spring, I got a feeling in my heart that we had to do this again.”

Perry said she also hoped the prayer gathering would show others the importance of Christianity to those living in the region.

“The one thing I hope to come out of this is that those around us see that we are a Christian area and that we’re not afraid to stand up in what we believe in,” Perry said.

All area church members, or anyone interested in learning more about the local church community, is invited to attend the event, Perry said.

“There will be a time at the end of the service to make a rededication, or you need to make a decision to accept Christ, there will be someone there to talk to,” Perry sad. “So there will be an opportunity to make a decision, but this won’t be a preaching event, it’s just praise and worship.”

Perry said the function is not considered a town event, and has been organized with the use of non-public funds.

“The town does not have any money put into this whatsoever; it’s entirely privately funded,” Perry said.
