KINGSPORT — Cute pictures of pets can not only populate their owners’ Facebook pages but, in an upcoming event, also play an important philanthropic role in the region’s health.

On Saturday, June 1, the Wellmont Cancer Institute will hold its first-ever Pet Picture Days fund-raiser, with all proceeds benefiting the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life.

All dog and cat owners are welcome to bring their pets, which will be photographed by Wendy Vogel, a nurse practitioner with the cancer institute. Vogel co-owns #JustShootMe Photography with her business partner, Lisa Watson.

“Photography’s always been a hobby of mine, and I’m thrilled that I can use that interest to advance my professional calling, which is caring for cancer patients,” Vogel said.

For a donation, pet owners can receive a 5- by 7-inch printout of their pet’s picture or one of several photo packages.

Their donation will be used by the American Cancer Society for cancer research and patient support.

Sessions will be offered on Saturday, June 1, from 10 a.m.-noon at Wellmont Medical Associates Oncology & Hematology in Kingsport, 4485 W. Stone Drive. Later that day, from 2 to 4 p.m., Vogel will be at the Wellmont Medical Associates Oncology & Hematology in Bristol, 271 Medical Park Blvd.

No appointment is necessary.

“The Wellmont Cancer Institute is a proud partner of the American Cancer Society, and we hope this will be an effective fund-raiser for this great organization,” Vogel said. “The support and services provided by the American Cancer Society help us give patients strength for today and hope for tomorrow, so we are pleased to assist with this project”

The two institutions have a firmly established partnership, with American Cancer Society resource centers in Wellmont Health System’s Allandale Outpatient Center and Southwest Virginia Cancer Center. Both organizations are focused on preventing cancer, expanding research capabilities and comprehensive care.
