“We wanted to have a platform so that artists could display and sell their artwork,” said Becca Sutphen, one of the organizers of the event. “That was a major goal for us because there just isn’t enough of this kind of thing where people with some really interesting and unique and special talents can come and share what they do.”
The Scott County Art Bazaar will be held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., June 1 under the shelters at Grogan Park in Gate City.
The cost for artists to reserve a table is $5, and space is still available.
The event is free to the public. However, non-perishable food items and donations will be accepted to benefit the Scott County Cooperative Ministries.
Items available for purchase will include handmade jewelry, woodwork, photography, paintings, sock monkeys, sculptures, crocheted pieces, handmade soaps, lotions and lip balms, pencil sketches, quilts, bows and hair pieces and glass jewelry.
In addition to the artists, food vendors will be on hand selling hot dogs, barbeque and funnel cakes.
Musical entertainment will be provided throughout the day by the ETSU Kingsport Bluegrass Band, Key Keepers, Boots on the Ground and The Possum Creek Boys.
Some of the artisans who will be on hand Saturday include Betty Hall, who will share the paintings and sculptures of her late husband, Jim Spears; Mary and Rob Sutphen (sculptures); Heather Applegate (photography); Bill Carter of Foggy Bottom Dulcimers (instruments); Jeri Jones (jewelry); Sandy Moore (glass jewelry); Milly Tunnell (handmade soaps, lotions and lip balms); Emogene Quillen (floral and crafts); Lisa Bradley (W.E. Creationz); Barbara Bell (pencil sketches); Kevin Barnette (woodwork and paintings); and more.
“We’d love to do this again next year,” said Sutphen. “I think the hardest thing is to do something once. I would be more than happy to keep this going next year. It seems like there’s a real need for something like this in the community.”
