ROGERSVILLE — A Kingsport man found passed out in his apartment while his children, ages 2 and 4, were wandering outside the residence unattended accepted a plea agreement on a reduced charge Monday in Hawkins County Sessions Court.
Caleb M. Broyles, 23, 212 Lewis Lane, Apt. 23, was charged on April 4 with two counts of child neglect. On Monday he pleaded guilty to attempted child neglect and was sentenced to six months probation, 24 hours of community service and a $50 fine.
Around 5:30 p.m. on April 4, a neighbor observed Broyles’ children outside and alone. The neighbor yelled into Broyles’ apartment several times but got no answer and then called police. When Kingsport police arrived, the apartment door was open, and Broyles was found asleep on a bed. The responding officer reportedly had to shake Broyles “several times” to get him awake.
After Broyles was arrested, the mother of the children was contacted at her place of employment and responded to take custody.
