I-26 collision in Kingsport leaves two dead

KINGSPORT — Eastbound traffic on Interstate 26 in Kingsport was shut down for nearly two hours Saturday night following a multiple-car wreck that left two people dead. According to the Kingsport Police Department, the incident took place at 8:51 p.m. on I-26 east near mile marker 2 when a 1999 Toyota Camry struck a 2002 Toyota Camry head on. The female drivers of both Toyota's were reportedly killed in the accident. The names of the victims were not released as of Sunday morning pending the notification of relatives. Authorities said the 1999 Camry was heading the wrong way in the eastbound lane of traffic when the accident occurred. An 2006 Nissan Sentra that was traveling eastbound on I-26 was also involved in the accident. Authorities said the Nissan left the roadway and overturned when its driver swerved right trying to avoid the accident. The driver of the Nissan received minor injuries. Authorities said neither of the Toyota drivers was wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident. The accident is being investigated by the Kingsport PD Traffic Division.
