Volunteer Navy JROTC places second in regional competition

CHURCH HILL — The Volunteer High School Navy JROTC earned second place overall in the “large school” category at the first annual Appalachian Region ROTC Olympics (ARRO) hosted by Science Hill High School Army JROTC last month.

The April 20 ARRO consisted of drill, marksmanship, athletic, and academic competitions as a comprehensive, year-end event.

The nine schools competing represented three states and Army, Navy and Air Force JROTC programs.

The VHS NJROTC cadets had been preparing after school for the event since early March.

First-year cadets competed in their own category by preparing drilling units comprised of and commanded by first-year cadets.

VHS NJROTC cadets earned several honors including:

• Academic: first-place unit commanded by Payton Hornton with top female Adara Gregory.

• Marksmanship: first-place unit commanded by Kayla Harr with top female overall Kayla Harr; top female prone Katelyn Arnold; top female standing Kayla Harr; and top female kneeling Kayla Harr.

• Fitness: third-place unit commanded by Jonah Short with top female mile Jillian Wolf; and top female flex-arm hang Jillian Wolf.

• Individual exhibition: first place Rachael Barkley.

• Armed knock out: 10th place Austin Baker and fifth place Rachael Barkley.

• Personnel inspection: third-place unit commanded by Rachael Barkley.

• First year unarmed squad: first-place unit commanded by Johnathan Morrison.

• Advanced unarmed squad: third-place unit commanded by Jordan Lyttle.

• First year armed squad: first-place unit commanded by Emily Rhoton.

• Advanced armed squad: second-place unit commanded by Zachary Chandler.

• Exhibition platoon : second-place unit commanded by Cody Rhoton.

• Overall: second-place unit commanded by Rachael Barkley.
