ROGERSVILLE — For the second time in three years an elderly driver mistook the gas pedal for the brake Saturday and drove into a Rogersville strip mall on Apple Lane.

At about 11:41 a.m. on Saturday, Rogersville police were dispatched to the strip mall at 109 Apple Lane, where an 83-year-old woman reportedly drove into the Amedysis Home Health office.

Amedysis was closed at the time, and no on was inside the business when the accident occurred.

Police said the woman had arrived at the Apple Drive strip mall, located just off of East Main Street, for a hair appointment at Tracy and Company hair salon.

Coincidentally, in April 2010 an 89-year-old female motorist arriving for a hair appointment drove through the storefront at Tracy and Company while five people, including two customers, were inside the salon.

On that occasion the woman had mistaken the gas pedal for the brake as well.

Two people were injured in the 2010 accident, including one woman who was pinned against a wall and had to be flown to Holston Valley Medical Center.

There were no injuries reported Saturday. Neither the accident report nor the name of the driver from Saturday’s accident was available Monday from the Rogersville Police Department due to the investigating officer being off duty.

Rogersville businessman John Metz, who owns the Apple Lane strip mall, said it was a freak accident for someone to drive into his building one time. He said it’s hard to believe that it has happened again.

“Needless to say I’ve ordered even more brightly colored curbs to put up,” Metz said.
