The Hawkins County Sheriff’s Office, federal Drug Enforcement Administration, and K-VA-T. Foods are working together in an attempt to lessen the amount of prescription drugs in the community.
The drug drop-off stations will be located at the Church Hill Food City on Highway 11-W at the Silver Lake Road intersection; and at the Rogersville Food City Store on Main Street near the Park Boulevard intersection.
These two locations will be open Saturday from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.
Both locations were chosen for the convenience of citizens to provide for a shorter drive for citizens who live in different parts of the county.
Lawson said he encourages everyone to take advantage of this opportunity to rid their homes of any old or unwanted prescription drugs or medicines.
“These medications can be either prescription drugs or over-the-counter medicines, which any citizen can drop off without any questions asked,” Lawson said. “Neither station will be able to accept any type of hypodermic needles or syringes. All gathered medications will be destroyed by the Drug Enforcement Administration.”
Lawson said he is grateful to both Hawkins County Food City locations for their ongoing support and assistance, as well as to the DEA.
Lawson added, “By working in joint efforts, we have been successful in ridding our community of many prescription drugs which could have ended up in the wrong hands. We are looking forward to a large amount of community participation on this day as well.”
Lawson has also obtained a secured drug drop-off box through the National Association of Drug Diversion Investigators. The box is being installed in the lobby of the Hawkins County Sheriff’s Office, and it will be accessible to the public within the next few days.
The HCSO became eligible to receive the drug drop-off box after members of the Narcotics Unit were certified as National Drug Diversion Investigators.
Lawson urges Hawkins County residents to take advantage of his office being fortunate enough to offer this opportunity.
Once this box is completely installed, it will be accessible Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. until 4 p.m.
