ROGERSVILLE — A Hawkins County jail inmate being treated for seizures at Hawkins County Memorial Hospital on Tuesday allegedly attempted an escape but was captured by a jail officer following a short foot chase.

David Shawn Harris, 37, 120 Elmwood Ave., Bulls Gap, didn’t fake his illness, but he did plan his attempted escape in advance, according to Sheriff Ronnie Lawson.

Harris was taken to the HCMH emergency room for medical treatment by jail officer Bill Henard. Lawson said Harris was allowed to use the bathroom in the emergency room, but he exited the bathroom in an adjoining room and fled the emergency room on foot.

Henard chased down Harris a short distance from the building and took him back into custody. Harris was being held in the Hawkins County jail for felony violation of community corrections.

He was additionally charged Tuesday with felony escape and was arraigned Wednesday in Sessions court.
