Professors use pop culture to teach business concepts

There’s a good chance you’ve never heard of the business concept of “preference reversal.”

But if you’ve heard Taylor Swift sing about being a “careless man’s careful daughter” in her 2011 hit, “Mine,” then you’ve heard a better-than-textbook example of the type of risk-taking associated with the concept.

At least, that’s according to Dirk Mateer, an economics professor at Pennsylvania State University who fills his lectures with references to everything from the rock band Linkin Park to “South Park” to help explain complex business concepts.
