The 2013-14 proposal also would be the first of a four-year plan to have a school system-owned wireless device for every city school student. The system this fiscal year is purchasing iPads for all city teachers.
As for the CIP 2013-14 budget, finance director David Frye made a presentation calling for $1.68 million in expenditures, including “growth” expenses of $240,000 for two additional school buses, $40,000 to make four classrooms out of one larger room at Robinson and $100,000 for system-wide growth and facilities planning.
Under the safety heading were $100,000 for classroom locks, $50,000 for a career technical education (CTE) wing walkway at D-B.
Under technology was $500,000 in wireless devices — enough for about 25 percent of the system’s 6,500 students — $90,000 for the D-B library, $30,000 for the Kennedy Elementary library and $100,000 for STEM or science, technology, engineering and math equipment.
Under maintenance was $30,000 for a new sound system at the Nancy Pridemore Theatre at D-B, $300,000 for roofing at Lincoln Elementary and $100,000 toward purchasing property near Jefferson Elementary and on Park Street next to Indian Highland Park.
For 2014-15 under growth was one bus at $120,000 and additional D-B band storage at $100,000 to replace a CTE area being used for storage. Under safety is $500,000 to build the D-B CTE walkway, $75,000 for generators and $50,000 for the Jackson Parking lot.
Technology was $400,000, part of Superintendent Lyle Ailshie’s four-year plan to have a device for every student in the system, while maintenance was $70,000 for Kennedy storage, $100,000 for Roosevelt storage, $255,000 for two cooling tower replacements, $75,000 for generators and $150,000 for property purchases for a total of $1.82 million.
All told, that’s $3.5 million. Ailshie said that after recent discussions with City Manager John Campbell, it appears about $3.4 million in bond funds will be available. Ailshie said if that is the case, he is working to see if cost savings on various projects could still allow all to be done for $3.4 million.
