As a Republican candidate Housewright, 31, 112 Housewright Road, Church Hill, finished fifth out of five candidates in the 2010 District 3 County Commission primary election.
As a Democrat candidate Housewright finished fifth out of five candidates in the 2006 District 3 County Commission general election.
Among the candidates who defeated Housewright in 2010 was current District 3 Commissioner Stacy Vaughan.
Around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Vaughan, who is also a Hawkins County Sheriff’s Deputy, was dispatched to a complaint of a suspicious vehicle at the dead Haley Drive located off of Beaver Lane near the Holston River west of Rogersville.
Upon his arrival Vaughan confronted Housewright allegedly attempting to hide or destroy Opana pills behind a vehicle owned by Joseph Wesley Steele, 30, 157 Helton Lane Lot 9, Rogersville.
To avoid the appearance of a conflict of interest Vaughan called in Deputy Zachary England to assist in the investigation. It was England who actually arrested and charged Housewright.
“Upon arrival I observed a green Pontiac Grand Prix backed into the woods at the dead end with three people standing beside the car,” Vaughan stated in his report. “I observed one of the individuals, later identified as Justin Housewright, on his knees near the rear of the passenger side of the vehicle attempting to conceal something under the vehicle.”
Steele allegedly gave a statement that he and his girlfriend, Deanna Devon Adkins, 27, 157 Helton Lane, Rogersville, had picked up Housewright in Church Hill and the three went to purchase Opana, which is a highly potent and highly addictive painkiller.
Steele further allegedly stated the three had gone to the remote location on Haley Drive after buying the Opana, and “shot up” shortly before Vaughan arrived.
A search of Steele’s vehicle allegedly revealed him to be in possession of more than 100 new syringes, two spoons for melting Opana, two used syringes in the front passenger floorboard, tourniquets, and a propane torch.
Vaughan had detained Housewright after realizing he was a former fellow candidate. When England arrived on the scene he checked beneath the vehicle and allegedly found four more syringes, five peach colored Opana pills and one white pill that wasn’t identified.
“Justin admitted to buying the Opana and shooting them into his arm prior to our arrival,” England stated in his report.Housewright was charged with tampering with evidence, possession of Schedule II narcotics and possession of drug paraphernalia.
He remained held in the Hawkins County Jail Thursday on $15,000 bond pending arraignment Monday.
Steele was charged with possession of Schedule II narcotics and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Adkins was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia.
Steele and Adkins were being held without bond due to being out on bond at the time of their arrest Wednesday. Steele had been arrested March 4 on charges including domestic assault, driving on a revoked license and possession of drug paraphernalia. Adkins had been arrested March 4 for domestic assault.
Both will also be arraigned Monday.
