The largest portion of the money — a total of $28.3 million — will go toward paving projects at various locations in VDOT’s 12-county Bristol District, which includes Lee, Scott and Wise counties and the city of Norton.
The contracts were awarded to W-L Construction and Paving Inc. of Chilhowie, Va.
In addition to those paving contracts, W-L was awarded a $1.9 million contract to pave shoulders and add rumble strips to Route 23 in Wise County from Scott Robinson Hollow Road (Route 692) to 7.14 miles north of Route 692.
W-L also received a contract valued at $868,991 to perform shoulder improvements at various locations in the Bristol District.
A $10.3 million contract was also awarded to reconstruct a section of Lover’s Gap in Buchanan County.
In addition to those paving projects, VDOT awarded several contracts for bridge repairs and improvements, including two in Lee County.
The first consists of a $446,802 contract awarded to Elk Knob Inc., of Pennington Gap, to replace the deck of the Route 606 bridge over Stone Creek in Lee County.
A second contract valued at $199,978 was awarded to Jonesville’s Estes Bros. Construction Inc., to replace a section of the Route 660 bridge over Hardy Creek in Lee County.
Other bridge projects receiving VDOT funding were an approximate $1.1 million contract to replace the deck of the Route 11 bridge located over I-81 Exit 32 in Washington County and a $517,883 contract that was awarded to replace a portion of the Route 637 (Cochran Road) bridge over the Clinch River in Tazewell County.
