Referendums on wine sales takes another step forward

A Tennessee House Local Government Subcommittee today advanced legislation that would allow localities to hold referendums next year on whether wine should be sold in retail food stores.

House Speaker Beth Harwell, R-Nashville, was in the hearing room to cast the deciding vote on the bill sponsored by state Rep. Jon Lundberg, R-Bristol.

A motion by state Rep. Dale Carr, R-Sevierville, to defer the bill until July 2014 was defeated by a 5-4 vote.

The state Senate version of Lundberg's bill -- opposed by the Tennessee Wine and Spirits Retailers Association -- recently advanced in a Senate State and Local Government Committee by one vote.
