CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) — A 16-year-old boy has been shot and killed near a Chattanooga school and police have arrested an 18-year-old suspect.

The Chattanooga Times Free Press reported there were conflicting statements about whether the victim, Lamunta Williams, was at Howard High School before he was shot Tuesday morning.

Police arrested Courtney Birt within a few hours and Birt was held without bond. Three witnesses told police they saw Birt shoot Williams after hanging out at an abandoned house a couple of blocks from the school. Police said Williams was shot several times — at least once in the head.

Records show Birt already faces previous charges of possession of a deadly weapon, reckless endangerment, assault and aggravated burglary. The newspaper said Birt is a documented gang member.
