WKPT-TV resumes half-hour local newscasts

staff report • Mar 1, 2013 at 5:14 AM

Beginning March 4, local ABC affiliate WKPT-TV will again air full half-hour local newscasts, produced at its studios in Kingsport. Air times will be 6 and 11 p.m.

The station has rebuilt its news department under veteran anchorman Jim Bailey, who joined Holston Valley Broadcasting in January of last year as director of TV news and public affairs.

"Over the past few months we've built a homegrown news team," said Bailey. "Our assistant news director, all of our reports, my co-anchor, and our meteorologist are all from the Tri-Cities area."

ABC 19's General Manager George DeVault adds, "We've been producing eight minute news briefs anchored by Jim Bailey for several months while the new team was being assembled. Now we again have a traditional television news department such as we had from 1969 to 2002."

A Greater Kingsport Area Chamber of Commerce "Business After Hours" will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Monday at the ABC-19 studios at Commerce Street and Center streets. It will include a live on-air ribbon cutting during 19 news at 6.
