McDonnell administration, road plan opponents wage intense battle

With a potentially legacy-making moment before him, Gov. Bob McDonnell’s administration is intensifying its push in the homestretch for a transportation compromise that could be in doubt.

This morning, Secretary of Transportation Sean Connaughton urged lawmakers getting a briefing on the compromise to embrace it, telling them it’s a “historic moment.”

But the lobbying against is just as intense, with the Virginia Automobile Dealers Association fighting the plan, which it says is “not only unacceptable to automobile dealers across the commonwealth, it is also harmful to consumers and to the health of the overall economy.”

The association estimates that the increase in vehicle sales tax would cost the average new car buyer an additional $375.
